Lieutenant Michael Warchola (1950 - 2001), grew up in Greenpoint Brooklyn and attended Stuyvesant High School, where he was a Golden Glove Boxer who fought under the name of Mike “Warhawk” Warchola. As an adult he was a resident of Middle Village. Michael served on FDNY for 24 years‚ the last 12 years at Ladder 5 in Greenwich Village, and he was completing his last 24 hours on tour, right before retirement, when he was killed during fire and rescue operations at the World Trade Center following the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001.
