J.H.S. 157 Stephen A. Halsey

Stephen A. Halsey (1798-1875) was known as the “Father of Astoria.” He was a wealthy fur trader who bought a large swathe of land along the East River. He incorporated the village in 1839 and changed the name to Astoria, after his mentor: the millionaire John Jacob Astor.
