Genevieve 'Jean' Albetta (d. 2004) was a long-time school crossing guard who helped the schoolchildren of St. Adalbert Catholic School cross the intersection at Calamus Avenue at Grand Avenue for 11 years. A vibrant and active participant in community affairs, she loved her neighborhood and could be found at her post in most every kind of weather, even while she was in poor health. Albetta, who was born in Hempstead, L.I., lived in several orphanages as a child. Following a 22-year career with TWA, she became a crossing guard only blocks from her Elmhurst home and was also shop steward for District Council 37. She worked up until the day of her passing on May 29, 2004, at age 74.
