J.H.S. 194 William Carr

William Henry Carr (1862–1920) was a teacher and school principal who served the Whitestone area at two public schools for 20 years. Born on May 28, 1862, in Morley, New York, he graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, in 1889. Carr taught at schools in Parishville and Rouses Point before serving as principal at Union High School in Parishville, as well as at Chazy, Rouses Point, Athens, and Astoria, all in New York state.

Carr came to Whitestone as principal in September 1900 and served the area for the next two decades. He married Elva Bell of Brasher Falls, New York, and the couple had two sons, Justin and William, Jr. A beloved educator and active community member, Carr was a member of Royal Arcanum, the Schoolmaster Club of New York City, the Principals Association of New York City, and the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Carr died at his home in Flushing on December 28, 1920, and he is buried, along with his wife, at Southville Cemetery, in Stockholm, New York.

Constructed in 1958, J.H.S. 194 William Carr was named in his memory. The school celebrated its 50th anniversary on May 30, 2009. To commemorate the event, the New York State Senate passed a legislative resolution on May 19, 2009, which noted Carr’s service as an “outstanding educator” in the community. The school is located at 154-60 17th Avenue in Whitestone.
